Revealed: Number of bite attacks on police officers on the rise
THE number of police officers being bitten is on the increase.

And whenever it happens, the victims face an agonising six-month wait to see if they have been infected with HIV or hepatitis.

Figures show that violence against officers is soaring.

In Strathclyde, 186 attacks on police required medical attention over the past three years. Almost a third of them – 51 – were bites.

More than 500 days have been lost to the force since 2009 as a result of attacks. Scottish Police Federation chairman Brian Docherty said: “Biting and spitting are happening more and more. There are blood tests if there’s a break of the skin. It can be six months before you get the result.”

In Lothian and Borders, there was a rise in assaults from 94 in 2009-2010 to101 in 2010-2011.

Seventeen officers were bitten.

In Tayside, the number of assaults requiring medical attention rose over the period from 76 to 91.

Eighteen of the officers were bitten.

Fife Constabulary saw a rise from 14 attacks in 2010-11 to 18 in 2011-12. Days lost to assault rose from nine to 99.

Other forces showed a steady tide of violence.

Our Force is soon to introduce "spit hoods". They are a semi-transparent mesh bag with the words "spitting hazard" emblazoned on the front.

We've had them for a while and are fine when you have a custody under control but most bite injuries happen during the struggle, and they can even bite with the hood on if you are not careful.

Yes, and it's very important to monitor the offender for signs of cyanosis or other medical problems which may not be readily apparent through the bag.
