Over estimated and not under estimated?
I have seen the truth and it makes no sense.

Glad to hear you're enjoying it. What sort of stuff have they covered? And where are Staffs on the scale of PCSO issued powers? Have they combined the TW role with you guys too?

I hope this is a long term position for you as look at the news with the Met PCSOs being reduced or Merseyside being scrapped entirely it seems. My advice would be to get in the regs as you're sitting pretty there.

Hi Riddle,

Staffordshire has109 PSCO and are aiming to recruit 140. All the cuts will be done through natural wastage. So no cut to PC and Police staff:)

The roll is all about ASB and we have been given powers to search people and confiscate any drugs.

gibbsw42,

You can search for drugs? About time PCSO's were given that power, just a shame it's a discretionary one.

No you can't. No PCSO in the country can search for drugs alone. The power is for alcohol and tobacco and/or a s32 PACE power for articles which may assist escape from lawful custody.

You can only seize drugs if found DURING one of the above searches, as well as if they are left openly visible.

There was a case that went to the criminal court of appeal in Devon around 4 years ago. Female PCSO tried to detain lads on stairs of a block of flats for 'purposes of drug search'. He pushed her away and got done for assault. He appealed it on the grounds they couldn't do that (lucky he was actually right). Appellate court decided it was lawful as the PCSO reasonably believed this was within her powers. A close call but appears you can do something if you reasonably believe you can, wouldn't hold my breath though.
