With all the Cuts and proposed Job losses looming, do you think this Country needs the forthcoming Olympic Games in 2012, the Olympics are estimated to cost the UK, 20 Billion Pounds !!.
Just think what Services and jobs could be saved with that amount of Money ???

I'm still clinging me fine hands onto the hope that the Olympics will generate more positive stuff for the Country (London) and the benefits will outweigh the cost. I don't know what the estimated revenue is supposed to be, but i'd like to think that that, as well as the long term physical improvements and developments in the City will be enjoyed for decades to come.

Waits to be seen I spose. :sljo:

Olympics- a big mistake and a tragic waste of money. Too late to scrap it, unfortunately- the financial damage is well underway...
I may not agree with what you have to say- but I'll defend to the death (well, almost) your right to say it.

It's going to be pitiful anyway after the amazing ceremonies China then Canada ( winter) put on , I think even the ceremony India put on for the commonwealth games will outstrip ours , The money could be better spent .

With all these cuts who is excatly is going to be paying for the policing or in fact doing the actual policing ???

btw tickets will cost from 20 -2012 pounds

In 1984 the Los Angeles Olympic Games made a profit of $250,000,000. In 1998 the Seoul Olympic Games made a profit of $300,000,000 The 1992 and 1996 Olympic Games also made a small profit.

So a profit CAN be made. The question is, how good are the businessmen and entrepreneurs who are setting up the franchises and advertising deals?

The worrying question is; 'What will our opening cermony be like?' :slsp:

I'm going for dancers dressed as Posties and Milkmen doing Riverdance and a brief poetic interlude by a troupe of chavs dressed in burberry, oh and Cliff Richard will probably come out to play too...... :sljo:

Perhaps some Olympic Games have made profits... but I would question how true those figures are, as well as who actually benefited vs who lost out. Can we really trust our 'honest' politicians (almost all of whom proved their dishonesty and greed in one form or another when it came to expenses, let's not forget!) As for the businessmen and entrepreeurs who made the deals- Methinks these people are all in it for personl gain, not for Britain's hope or glory. I believe profits could be made- but since we'd need honest and good management from the powers-that-be, I doubt the country will benefit.

As for an opening ceremony, I think Gordon Brown, Tony Blair and their cronies should be forced at gunpoint to act out a Morris dancer show for the world to see. I think that alone would be the only guaranteed money-making endeavour for the Olympics.

I couldnt agree more with you mate. It really Pee's me off to see how much money this country spends on things like sport. We also give how many millions to aid relief, plus many many more pounds to god knows what. If this country is in that bad a state surely we should be cutting back on everything, specially luxuries like the olympics !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Actually grass roots sport is seriously under funded in this country , It is still widely out of reach for most working class people & most athletes work their backsides off to get where they are today some get NO funding what so ever , and don't get me started on the state of the facilities , The one good thing that the Olympics may bring about is to encourage more youngsters into sport instead of sitting on their backsides playing PlayStation's & xbox s and getting fat .

Exactly, if anything MORE money needs to be plowed into sport. My ideal world would have every able child up to 18 years old playing some form of regular sport.

Such a shame football at the top level has become a mess but a bigger pool of talent to cultivate from = more likely success in the future = more incentive for kids to play sport = happier, healthier lifestyle.

Go sports! :sljo:

Dogma- quite right, the Olympics are definitely an unecessary luxury.

Sport is a GAME, nothing more. Yes, it should be encouraged for the reasons some on here have mentioned. However, there is no need to pour billions in taxpayers money into it- especially at a time when we need to cut back on as many non-essentials as possible. Sport funding should ONLY come from those who wish to contribute to it, as well as from fans who wish to pay for tickets to attend sporting events.

Sport has been totally ruined through commercialisation over the past few decades. Take footballers' wages, for example. They get paid 'silly money'- which encourages greed rather than talent- hardly 'sporting' in my view.

As for a happier, healthier lifestyle, kids should be discouraged by their parents and schools from playing computer games and made to go out to play in the fresh air instead. As for funding, an adequate football costs no more than £5, whilst going jogging is free. Groups of kids (any number or age) can do circuit training (to suit any level) in the park... again, for free. Those who require a tennis racquet or cricket bat can save up to buy a cheap one rather than going for top-of-the-range. And why have the most expensive branded sports clothes when cheap sport shorts and T-shirts will do? Why pay £100+ for a pair of trainers when you can get a good pair for £25?

We all need to think about making cutbacks- not just on a national level but also on a personal level as well.

The opening ceremony has a budget of 70 million , Danny Boyle who is ' directing ' the ' show ' has been quoted as saying Don't expect anything near what china , Canada even India put on , it will be ' functional' , what worries me in the article he kept banging on about David bowie , jimmy page and the stone roses eee gawds definitely one to miss then ( cept the stone roses who are awesome )

I really do hope he does not roll out jimmy page , David beckham etc etc it will be soooo shameful , cheap & cheerful I can live with but dinosaurs who to be honest DO NOT REPRESENT Britain as whole I can't ...
